Some of you will really say “I want diverse media” but instead of seeking out or consuming all the diverse media that’s already out there you just cling to the media you already have and insist it should do better.
Hundreds of creators of color, queer creators, disabled and neurodivergent creators: here are the books we’re writing! Here are the stories we’re telling! Here are the things we’re creating!

Like it or not, publishing houses and film studios and other media giants respond to MONEY. Money. You have to buy the books and stream the films that are pushing progressive stories and characters for them to realize that it’s lucrative, and to fund more of it. Writing gay Game of Thrones fan fiction is great and all but it’s never going to convince the people in charge to give you the changes you want to see. Walking in to the movie theater to see the sixth installation of the latest mega series, crossing your fingers for those two seconds of lesbian rep, does nothing for the small time creators who are fighting to make the industries you love more genuinely diverse.
People on this website, who are usually part of minority groups themselves, put so much time and effort into compiling massive lists and references for diverse media, often as niche as “black asexual protagonist” or “disabled queer romance” or “leading lesbians in science fiction”
But 90% of people on this site who “want diverse media” are watching Supernatural for the 20th time hoping Dean can be retconned to be bisexual. They’re “imagining” Hermione as black. They’re calling Hawkeye and Thor the peak of disability rep for their deafness and PTSD that the writers will barely touch with a 25 and a half foot pole. They’re calling Olaf “queer-coded.”
It’s a hard pill to swallow, but not every piece of media is going to be diverse. Ever. There are always going to be stories about white cishet men marrying white cishet ladies and saving the world. The choice you get is not which stories are going to be diverse, your choice is which stories get your money as they are.
If a movie theater is showing an animated film and a live-action film and you buy tickets to the live-action film and complain afterward because “it should have been animated, I only like animated movies!” It doesn’t matter, because you’ve given that movie your money instead of the film that was already animated and would have appealed to you more.
Looking at you people who ship straight characters together in a violently obsessesive fashion and completely ignore canon lgbt couples .
If you recast Mockinbird in a spin off, you’re wrong.
